Third Life: Your World. Beyond Your Imagination.
Combining elements of spectacle, showmanship and irony to create a play space in Second Life that spoofs the promise of blurring the lines between reality and virtual reality.
Project Goal
The team sought to create the illusion of a new cutting-edge 3D environment even better than Second Life called Third Life. The idea was to create an emotional buildup, make the journey full of promise and excitement, ultimately leading to a nonevent. We referenced spectacle, showmanship, and irony throughout the space to convey the message of Third Life to potential victims. The pitch to potential suckers: "Third Life - so much more than Second Life you have to climb out of Second Life to see it." (Think vintage Star Trek episode: "For the world is hollow and I have touched the sky").

Created for Expressive Virtual Space, Spring 2008, Celia Pearce.
Team Members: Carol Bales, Michelle Kwasny, Evan Mandel, Bobby Schweizer, Puja Verma
This virtual space was demonstrated during Digital Media Demo Day in Spring, 2008.

The Concept

The Pitch to Visitors |
|

|
Built on a private island, the core structure is a walkable tower, reaching toward th upper limits of Second Life. Visitors approach the base of the glass tower on a red carpet; the stairs have no railing, so staying on while climbing presents a certain challenge.
At intervals, glass rooms are positioned with transport objects. When interacted with, the visitor is taken to a room that demonstrates a new aspect of "Third Life." Structurally speaking, the areas visitors are transported to are positioned above the fly zone in SecondLife. This allowed us to create large exhibit rooms, supposedly contained within the small glass cubes.

Introducing Third Life. Similar to Second Life, everything you will see in Third Life is created by it's residents. However, we like to say Third Life is beyond your imagination: it gives you a complete immersive experience that embodies the word AWESOME.
Third Life has been injected with all new powerful Artificial Intelligence Algorithms, which allow it to compensate for (build upon) human mental capacity. Pair this with a groundbreaking avatar customization model, and your avatar will become more real than you. Third Life is backed by a 20x more powerful meta-universe creation engine, resulting in a feel of a genuine 'fourth place.' The haunts and hangouts of real sociability within Third Life make it easier for your avatar to feel more at home... even when traveling beyond gravity. With a closer links between Third Life in-world and out-world life, you are going to become closer to your avatar than ever before! And, discover whole new abstract places that will blow your mind! Enjoy all of the features of Third Life by becomming a Beta Tester now and "Touch The Sky"! And along the climb you'll learn new ways of interacting with this new luscious 3D environment.

A World Beyond Gravity
Using optical illusions and techniques to disorient the player, alternative gravities can be constructed in localize areas of Third Life. For the demo, this involves the use of an upside-down house that makes use of matte illustrations to change the world’s orientations and glass walkways to provide the illusion of walking on air.
|
The Pitch:
Second Life limits you to the conventions of the physical world. How mundane. But in Third Life you can build and live anywhere you want! Want to live on the side of a volcano? Sure you can do that in Second Life... but how about living _sideways_ on a volcano? But why stop there? Why limit yourself to the bounds of the planet? Enjoy your own quiet white-picket fence house in outer space and take the family dog for a space walk.

Avatar Customization
The avatar customization room is designed in a clean, sterile, white space, with modern, high-style design components. Illustrating the core concept, a large Virtual Vitruvian Man (patterned after Leonardo da Vinci’s drawing) both establishes and mocks the unreal expectations for avatar and personal perfection. Avatar customization features are presented in consoles that are, sadly, “offline”. To provide some clues to the absurdity of the presentation, the Aging feature is presented as trademarked “Aging”.

The Pitch:
AVATAR CUSTOMIZATION LIKE YOU’VE NEVER SEEN!
In THIRD LIFE, your AVATAR will be more real than you are. With ground-breaking new features for Avatar customization, your avatar can mirror you so completely, it blurs the lines between you. Unprecedented control over the look, mood, age, wardrobe and reactions of your avatar - your avatar can be just like you... but better! Unprecedented customization of Your Avatar Newer, powerful Artificial Intelligence Algorithms have allowed us to increase the customization of your avatar. Show people photos of you and your avatar and dare them to tell which is which.

In-World-Out
The In-World-Out room is based on a park or carnival setting, showcasing a number of different features at various tents across the space. The purpose of this area is to highlight Third Life's ability to integrate a player's in-world with their out-world. When the player is teleported to the space, they land right in front of a sign describing In- World-Out, and giving a brief overview of the three sections: Pizza Ordering, Plastic Surgery, and Dating. Each tent describes these individual features in more detail, via a sign stand and supplemental imagery and props. In order to navigate the space, stones have been placed along the ground to guide the players, and a large carousel has been used to direct the player's movement.

The Pitch:
With greater connections between in-world and out-world, Third Life brings you closer to your avatar than ever before! Ever been in-world and thought, "Man, I'm starved!" Don't worry, Third Life lets you order food right where you are and have it delivered in 25 minutes or less! No longer do you need to disengage from Third Life for basic bodily requirements (well, eating at least)! Everyone knows that your avatar is the ideal representation of yourself. After all the time and effort you put into making your avatar perfect, why not use those details to transform yourself? Use our Plastic Surgery feature to build a surgical plan to transform yourself into your avatar, and send it to our plastic surgeons right away! Unlucky in love? With Third Life, you can give your avatar personality traits and have them interact with other avatars, based on matching traits. Have your avatar do the work for you, and find true love! Once your avatars meet and have hit it off in Third Life, take the next step to meet the owner of the avatar in your First Life! Finding love has never been easier!

Beyond Your Imagination
The objective of this abstract space is to get the user to play a section of the bass line of Pacelbel's Canon by interacting with a series of geometric shapes. When interacted with, these objects release a particle/light display that corresponds with a particular note, clueing the visitor that they are on the right track in reconstructing the music. For demonstration purposes, the room is beyond comprehension. Signage explains to the visitor that if they were in Third Life they would be able to understand what they see. But since they are not, they are left to dream of a place where the answer is immediately apparent. The Abstract room is comprised of eight eight-note repetitions of the bass. Imagine a square; place a point at the midpoint of each side and at each corner. Number these, from the top going clockwise, 0-7. Have eight of these squares, each inside the last, naming the outermost A and the innermost H.
|
The Pitch:
Have you ever felt constricted by Second Life? Day after day, building houses on the sides of volcanoes, making inflatable hover bikes, setting up jungle gyms in space - same old, same old. What to do? Move beyond your imagination with Third Life.
Move to a world where concepts take shape, and shapes become concepts. Interact with spaces where purple can have a direction, where the fragrance of flowers can be a dramatic chord. Think past the concrete and embrace the abstract. In our Third Life demo, you can see a musical performance room...which uses no sound.
Mystified by the space? Perhaps the first note in the sequence will give you a bit of a clue. It will all become clear to you...when you enter Third Life.

The Conclusion
Finally reaching the topmost cube of the tower, visitors are invited to finally teleport to Third Life. Upon teleporting, the player is virtually kicked out of the glass room and sent into a freefall to the ground.

The Punchline
On the ground at the crash site, "error messages" are positioned to let the visitor in on the joke. "Error Code "204: Second Life has banned this portal to Third Life. In the meantime, we encourage you to explore your First Life."
